Eukalyptus

Scientific name: Eucalyptus globulus

Clade: Vascular, seed producing, angiosperms

Date collected: April 18th, 2011

Location collected: University of California San Diego

Habitat: They reside along river banks and on floodplains subject to frequent or periodic flooding, and line the channels of sandy watercourses and creeks. They occur mainly in coastal regions.

Nativity: While eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, the trees also flourish in coastal regions of the United States.

Special notes: A mature Eucalyptus can be in the form of a low shrub or a large tree. They range from 33 feet to over 200 feet in height. Eucalypts have become economically important trees, and have become a cash crop in cities in Africa and the Peruvian Andes. Due to their fast growth, the main benefit of these trees is their wood.  They provide lots of desirable characteristics for use as ornament, timber, firewood and pulpwood.
